from band member Ken Watters:
here are 5 of my favorite Tabou tunes (to start with - more to come!):
1) "Nasyonalite" (from GO TABOU GO) - GREAT example of pure "Tabou-style" straight-up KOMPA, in that the tune starts off pretty & morphs itself into a CYCLONE without the listener realizing what exactly has happened... This song was more of a "B-Side" kind of thing, but it's my favorite tune from that CD.
2) "La Nature" (from AUX ANTILLES) - This is the first of two songs composed by Tabou's late keyboardist Ernst Marcellin & carries a certain emotional weight that is uncommon in any genre of Caribbean music
3) Aux Antilles" (from AUX ANTILLES) - One of LOTS of GREAT tunes written by Yves Joesph / AKA "Fanfan TiBot"... This song was the very first Tabou songs I ever learned & it made me realize just how succesful the band was, when I heard it one two different airlines' inflight entertainment channels in one month. BEAUTIFUL horn lines & nice lyrics...
4) "Min Sirop" (not sure which CD this is from, but it goes back a while) - this tune has an organic groove & quirky method to combining the lyrics with the "left-turns" it takes - I LOVE this song...
5) "Laura" (from GO TABOU GO) - Ex-Tabou rhythm guitarist Gary Resil wrote this tune - VERY nice, natural-sounding melody & horn lines. This song does NOT follow traditional kompa song form (repeats the original melody line throughout in various forms, goes from minor to MAJOR, which is opposite of lots of kompa forms etc) - this was a seldomly-performed Tabou song (even when GO TABOU GO was being actively pushed), but one of the stronger tunes by the band from that era...
There is a START, anyway - more to come in the future!
Ken
