Tabou Combo ~ 'Independence Cha-Cha'

New video clip by Tabou Combo directed by Jocel Almeus - a remake of a song by Congolese singer and bandleader, Joseph Kabasele. It is widely recognized as the African Independence Anthem because Kabasele, also known as “Grand Kalle”, originally released the song in 1960, when the Congo obtained its independence from Belgium. It honors the nation’s heroes, Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba and President Joseph Kasavubu. As a result of Grand Kalle’s pioneering deals with European record labels, his music was heard throughout the Francophone market and the song topped the charts all over Europe.

“The reason we chose to cover that song is because many French-African countries became independent in the 1960's and this year they are all celebrating the 50th anniversary of their independence,” said Yves Joseph of Tabou Combo. The lyrics of the song are very relevant and can also relate to Haiti, the first Black Republic. In this time of rebirth of our nation, Haiti, it seems befitting to make these declarations again and Tabou Combo is at the forefront, waving our flag. The video for the single re-enacts the Congolese Independence Ball with Tabou Combo as the performing band.
